    Referring to their sleeping children, Edna says, "I don't care [if they wake up], as long as I can maybe wake you up." What does she mean by this?

    In The Communist Manifesto, it is written that class revolution only happens when the proletariat have first developed their class consciousness. Once they become aware of themselves as the oppressed class, the doors to revolution are open. Edna seems to have achieved her own class consciousness by observing Joe's relationship with his boss.

    In fact, the words she uses during her speech at the end of the scene mirror Marx and Engel's words closely - a technique Odets employs throughout the play to inject overt leftist...
