Emma Starling

Emma Starling is the story's protagonist, the daughter of Clive and Ingrid. During Emma's birth, the nurse said she had special natural healing powers and could heal any disease. When Emma grew up, everyone in town knew she was a supernatural girl with healing abilities.

The author depicts Emma as a bright girl determined to achieve her goals. After graduating from high school, Emma's father sends her to a medical school in California. The father believes that her daughter is meant to be a successful doctor. However, after arriving in California, Emma never steps on campus. Instead, she starts doing odd jobs. Later, Emma's mother summons her to return home to take care of her ailing father. Emma reveals to her parents that she never graduated from university, and they are all disappointed in her.

Clive

Clive is Emma's father and Ingrid's husband. Clive is a focused man who wants all his children to achieve a university education. When Emma graduates from high school, he encourages her to join a medical school. Unfortunately, Clive falls ill and starts seeing hallucinations. Clive sees small animals in his hallucinations, and Earnest Baynes, a naturalist who died in the 20th century. Emma returns from school to care for him, but now, she does not have healing powers.

Harold Baynes

Harold Baynes is a naturalist who lived in the 20th century. Baynes loved animals and spent most of his life in Corbin Park. Baynes conducted several studies of various animals to improve their lives in the park. After his death, the people of Everton continue to celebrate him because of his immense contribution to preserving Corbin Park.

Crystal Nash

Crystal is Emma's childhood friend. Emma and Crystal went to the same high school. Crystal is an intelligent girl who has a passion for business. Unfortunately, Crystal starts using hard drugs such as heroin. One day, Crystal disappears from the town. When Emma returns from California, she discovers that Crystal has mysteriously disappeared. When Emma tries to seek assistance from the police, she is shocked when the officers tell her they are not interested in looking for drug addicts.

Ingrid

Ingrid is Emma's mother. When Emma's father gets sick, Ingrid summons Emma to return to help care for her father. When Emma returns, Ingrid suspects something is wrong, and when she questions her, she reveals that she dropped out of college and never graduated.

Mack Durkee

Emma's fiancé Mack helps her secure a teaching job at a local school to replace Clare Wish. Clare is sacked because she is accused of helping her husband to do the illegal heroin business. Clare tries to plead with her employer to spare her, but she is forced to vacate the school's premises, and Emma takes her place.
