Daoud Hari

Daoud is a real person, the author of this book, his memoir about the conflict about the conflict in Sudan, and how that affected his community in Darfur. For Daoud, the conflict also represented an opportunity for him to use his education in English as a service to his community. He helped to translated Sudanese into English so that the world could be more informed in real time, and then this is his reflection on those experiences.

"The Translator"

Hari depicts himself with this nickname, but the title refers not to him specifically, but to his role. This means that the book is at least in part a depiction of how important good translators are. Because of "The Translator," people's personal loss and heartbreak can be shared across the earth. In his remarkable sacrifices and service to his community, "The Translator" endures much hardship.
