The Spirit of the Beehive Summary

The Spirit of the Beehive Summary

Ana is a six-year-old girl who stays with her parents and her older sister. The child’s parents, Fernando and Teresa, do not engage each other or their children in conversations. Fernando spends much of his time in book-lined study, reading, and writing about beehives. On the other hand, Teresa writes love letters to an unknown man. Ana spends most of her time hanging with her older sister, Isabela. Ana’s life changes completely when she attends a movie show of Frankenstein along with Isabela. The screening of the film displaying a monster killing a little girl stuns Ana.

Ana asks why the monster killed the girl and why the people killed it after the incident. However, Isabela assures Ana that everything happening in the film is an illusion. Additionally, Isabela tells Ana that she can speak with the monster if she closes her eyes. The monster displayed in the movie fascinates Ana. Ana can’t get over the film. After learning about Ana’s obsession with the monster, Isabela shows her a sheepfold and claims it is the monster’s house. Ana keeps on going to the sheepfold until one day she finds an injured republican fighter.

Ana sympathizes with the soldier, whom she believes is the monster displayed in Frankenstein. As a result, she provides the fugitive with clothes and food. Unfortunately, Francoist soldiers find the fugitive and shoot him to death. As well, they return the watch to Fernando, who then scolds her daughter. Ana leaves home, prompting the villagers to look for her. The film depicts a family incapable of getting over the impacts of the civil war.
