The Shadow Lines Lesson Plan

Notes to the Teacher

The Shadow Lines includes adult themes, such as explicitly described violence and murder, and sex, including one instance of unwanted, aggressive sexual advances. It might be helpful to preface reading the book with a thoughtful discussion on both topics. Prejudice and bigotry related to religion, class, and nationality also play a large role in the novel. It will be helpful to discuss the history behind the conflict between Hindus and Muslims in Southeast Asia to help students prepare for the content of this book. Provide students with a safe space to talk about these topics, as some students might be personally connected to the material.
