The Romance of Tristan Summary

When Tristan’s mother Blanchefleur died right after his birth, he was cared by Rohalt, his father servant. Tristan learned how to use a sword, how to fight, to keep his word, and to hate dishonesty.

Then one day, King Mark saved him from merchants and decided to take him to his castle as a knight, Tristan agreed. Being in King’s castle Tristan became a real close person to him and King started to treat him as his own son. Soon Mark even gave Tristan very hard but important task – to conquer Iseult with a Hair of Gold and make her his wife. Tristan dared to do this task and went to the lands where Iseult lived. There he fought a dragon, and Iseult had to marry King Mark. The mother of Iseult made for her and her new husband special wine with some herbs that had to make them fall in love with each other forever. She gave this wine to Brangein, her servant and asked him to care about it and let drink it only Iseult and the King and only after wedding. But when Iseult with Tristan were on the ship, going to meet Mark, they found this wine and drank it together. From that moment they fall in love.

Iseult married King Mark but still she loved Tristan; they often met in the garden. One evening, King Mark decided to go to this garden and found out that they two are really in love. However Tristan and Iseult were aware of Mark’s presence and started to talk about their innocence and deny their love. One night King found Tristan’s blood between his and Iseult’s bed and decided to kill them both. The lovers run to the forest from King’s anger.

In the forest, they could enjoy their wild life and give themselves up to their passion. But King Mark found them there sleeping and brought attention to the question of their innocence, as far as Iseult proves it by a judgment with a red hot iron. There they fates are separated.

During this separation, wandering Tristan married Iseult of the White Hands. However on their wedding night he realizes that made a huge mistake and he still loved Iseult. Then he made a few attempts to see her again in a role on madman or leper, but none of that worked.

In the end, fatally wounded Tristan was sent to Iseult for treatment. He arrived, but too late because his jealous wife made such a situation in which Tristan thought that Iseult abandoned him and didn’t wait for him. Tristan died. Iseult came to him and died in his arms in sorrow. Their bodies were buried in Cornwall.

Soon, when King Mark came to their tombs, he saw that there was a plant growing from Tristan’s tomb and connecting with Iseult’s as a symbol of their eternal love.
