The Poetry of Sarojini Naidu Summary

Autumn Song

The poem “Autumn Song” is a short poem that contains the description of the beauty and the sadness of the coming autumn. This sadness is in relation to the sadness of the speaker’s heart, since this is a character whose dreams are lost and who is in despair because of that.

Cradle Song

“Cradle Song” is a poem that reads like a lullaby intended for putting a child to sleep. The speaker of the poem is presumably a mother putting a child to sleep and singing about spice and fields of rice, of flowers and dreams.

In the Forest

“In the Forest” is a poem about letting go of the past, of the old burdens, gathering what remains and moving forward. The speaker of the poem convinces her heart to burn the dead dreams in the forest and mourn for them. But soon the speaker realizes that they must rise and face the world again, must conquer the sorrow of life with sorrow of song.

My Dead Dream

“My Dead Dream” is quite straightforward and the meaning and content is easily assumed from the title. The speaker of the poem addresses a dead dream that she buried a long time ago, and that came back to life to try and strip her of the accomplishments and the person she became. She tells the dream to go back to its grave where a small child buried it eons ago, a child that was guided with its heart.

The Bangle Sellers

The poem is an ode to the traditional Indian bangles, and it contains the various descriptions of various types of them. They all have different purposes, for different stages in life of an Indian woman, for brides, for married and those who have experienced life.

The Soul’s Prayer

“The Soul’s Prayer” is a poem told from a first-person singular point of view, indicating the voice of the poet herself. The poem starts with the speaker of the poem addressing the divinity, God, and saying how she asked in her childhood pride to experience both grief and pain, all there is to life. She then proceeds to mention all the pain and grief experienced and the poem ends with a prayer for peace.
