    In this section, how does Bailey take an authentic, active role in his life for the first time? How does this represent growth for his character?

    Bailey’s life changes a great deal over the course of the novel. He takes some moves to cause this to happen, but small ones that require very little effort. For example, he decides to go to the circus, but his friendship with Poppet and Widget somewhat simply happens to him, rather than being something he makes great efforts to cause.
