The Last Thing He Told Me Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

Hannah’s job

Hannah’s job of molding wood, or wood turning, represents an important symbol in the novel. Her grandfather is the one who influences her decision and passion for this career. Wood is not an easy material to mold and shape, but this is what Hannah likes most about. It is an obvious symbol of her relentless fight to find a solution to the difficulties she faces throughout the novel.

Bailey’s piggy bank

Once Bailey’s piggy bank makes a second entrance into the impactful flashbacks of conversations Hannah had with Owen, it becomes obvious that it is not an ordinary piggy bank. She asks her close friend to check on it while she is in Austin with Bailey, and sure enough, the piggy bank contains a steel safe. Within that safe is a will left by Owen/Ethan, leaving Hannah in charge of Bailey if something happens to him.

The ”Protect her” note

The most important symbol in the novel is the note delivered to Hannah written by Ethan, which asks of her to protect Bailey. It is in the opening chapter of the book, and Hannah is reminded of it throughout. It is a symbol of sacrifice and love. Both Owen and Hannah sacrifice everything to keep Bailey safe.
