The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue Summary

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue Summary

In a small village in France called Villon, at the beginning of the 18th century, a young girl called Adeline dreams of a larger world and doesn’t want to die living a small life. Years pass, and she is about to get married to a man the village chose for her. Adeline is scared, and desperately, following the old religious teachings of her nanny Estele, calls for the old gods to help her. Gods during the day don’t respond, and Adeline doesn’t notice that she keeps praying into the night, when the gods of the dark answer. A voice out of the darkness responds to her prayers, takes a form of her dream man, and they make a deal in exchange for her soul.

In the present, year 2014, in the city of New York, Addie is living an invisible life. She has lived for three centuries, and no one can remember her once she is out of sight. The novel moves back and forth, from present to past. It shows Addie adapting to her immortal, invisible life after making a deal with the devil Luc. She moves from Villon to Paris, and from there the rest of the world. Luc visits her almost every year on their anniversary and shows peculiar interest in her. Addie is slowly discovering loopholes in her pact-she is not able to influence the course of time and history, directly, but is able to plant ideas that leave a trace of her in history.

In the present time, Addie has grown tired of her immortal life, until she meets Henry at a bookstore, and discovers that he remembers her even the next day. Henry and Addie start to form a relationship, while she is hiding the truth from him, until an incident forces her to confess. Henry believes her because he has also made a deal with the devil. He wanted to end his life, but Luc offered him a year of being loved by everyone in exchange for his soul. He leaves the one-year detail out of his confession to Addie. Addie and Henry find comfort and happiness in each other. Her past reveals that Addie eventually formed a physical/love relationship with Luc, and he confessed his love to her, only to reveal that it was a part of his plot to make her surrender.

The anniversary of their pact nears, and Addie is afraid for Henry and herself because Luc might appear, even though he didn’t for decades. The anniversary arrives and Luc appears, and reveals to Addie that Henry only has a little more than a month left before their deal ends. Addie tries to convince him to spare Henry, but he refuses. Addie and Henry try to enjoy their last days. On the night of the end of Henry’s deal, Addie suddenly reveals that she successfully convinced Luc to spare him, in exchange for her. She tells him to remember her. A time passes and Henry published the book “The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue", in which he reveals her story to the world so that everyone know her name and history.

The novel ends with Addie holding and reading the book with Luc by her side. Luc confessed to her that he always loved her, but Addie secretly plans to make his existence miserable at her side, so that he eventually ends their pact and takes her soul.
