Doctor Wybrow wants to sneak out when his servant informs him that a young woman is waiting to see him. The doctor has many patients who want to see him. However, he becomes worried when Countess Narona comes to him and says that she is going nuts. Narona tells the doctor about Agnes Lockwood, a woman she usurped from her fiancée Lord Montbarry. The doctor discovers that Narona has made news for all wrong reasons. People think she is ostensibly wicked. Montbarry has wickedly ended his relationship with Agnes to marry Narona.

Montbarry and Narona are spending their time in a reclusive decaying palace. Soon after, Montbarry passes away. The cause of his death is pneumonia, but his family believes that something sinister has happened to their kin. After the death of Montbarry, a courier named Ferrari disappears mysteriously. Montbarry leaves £10,000 insurance money to his wife. When Ferrari disappears, his wife also gets £1000 note. Later, the palace is refurbished as a hotel. One time, Montbarry’s family unknowingly books and stays in the room where he is alleged to have died.

The family members staying in the room start experiencing nightmares. For instance, Agnes is engulfed in fear when she sees a ghostly head falling from the ceiling. The following day a human head is found decaying in a cubicle. The book is full of mysteries and suspicions. The possible killings that are alleged to have been caused by Countess Narona come as a shock to every person.
