Cloris is variously described as a "shepherdess," "nymph," and "maid." She has white skin and unusually bright eyes capable of expressing conflicted emotions such as sexual desire and shame at feeling sexual desire. She is overpowered by Lisander but later decides she desires him. She is eventually disappointed by his inability to keep an erection.
Lisander (Lycander in modern spelling) is an overly-impulsive shepherd who desires to have sex with Cloris. He is a young man not used to controlling his desire. He thinks of himself as a capable lover, but when he ultimately fails to get an erection, he seeks to put blame on the gods, fate, and even a curse on his lineage before deciding to blame Cloris.
