    Glossing the Gloss

    Group Discussion

    Objective:

    To examine the Wife of Bath's sources of authority and thus her credibility as a tale teller.

    Common Core Standards:

    CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.6, CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.7

    Structure:

    Lead a class discussion: How does the Wife of Bath use or misuse her textual sources in her prologue? Introduce the idea of "glossing" as a whole class.

    Assign student groups to different Biblical sources that the Wife "glosses" in her prologue, e.x. the letters of St. Paul, the discussion around the injunction to "Be fruitful and multiply," the stories of Biblical wives who have mastery over their husbands, and the...
