The Boat recounts scenes with childhood trauma, violence (both racially motivated and general), poverty, parental illness, separation from parents/family, and immigration. Racial slurs and drug usage are also mentioned in some of the stories, though not as any main storyline. This material may be triggering to some students and the teacher should warn the class ahead of time about each of these occurrences. Avoid the use of any racial slurs in the classroom; if utilizing a direct quote from the text, write the slur in the form "c*****."
