As a work of nonfiction, The Blind Side explores issues of systemic racism and generational poverty that have greatly impacted Michael's life (as well as the lives of much of the Black community at large). Because these topics can trigger students who continue to face these issues today, it might be helpful to provide some historical context, including the evolving laws and policies regarding racism and segregation, and how American society has continued to find ways to stifle people of color through loopholes and other methods.
