Nat Hochen
Nat Hochen is the protagonist of the story. He is the first who notices strange behavior of the birds, and his family also is the first who is attacked by the birds at night. Nat does everything possible to save his family from the revolt of the feathered, and in the process proves himself a reasonable person who tries not to panic.
Nat’s wife
Nat’s wife stays unnamed. She is a woman who can panic and fuss about, but Nat’s instructions help her to collect her sense and be more reasonable.
Jill
Jill is Nat’s daughter. She is already mature enough to understand all the seriousness of the situation.
Johnny
Johnny is Nat’s son. He is too young yet to understand everything what is going on.
Mr. Trigg
Mr. Trigg is the owner of the farm near the cottage of Nat. The morning after the attack, Nat finds him and his wife dead.
