    It is possible that the duke and dauphin, like gamblers on a run, simply did not know when to cash in their chips. It is also possible that they did not see the traps closing around them until it was almost too late. Also, based on their past of successful cons and escapes, the duke and dauphin may have felt hubris. As long as students properly reference the chapters and readings, many legitimate answers are possible.
