Why do some readers think that Huck and Jim are lovers?
This question should be used for mature classrooms only. Some scholars have suggested that there are serious homo-erotic undertones to Huck and Jim's relationship, and if that is the truth, there is some evidence in these chapters. Huck and Jim explicitly care for each other, live together day and night, hunt and fish together, and are often naked together. However, any homosexuality between them is implicit, rather than explicit. Students should be encouraged to discuss this issue openly, with the knowledge that there is no right or wrong answer, and with respect for diversity.
