    Family Feud

    Kind of Activity:

    discussion and group work

    Objective:

    understanding Twain's use of parody and tropes

    Structure:

    Discuss the feud between the Sheperdsons and Grangerfords. Lead a discussion about the possible origins of the feud. Elicit ideas about why Twain did not reveal the source of the feud. Compare to the feud between the Montagues and Capulets, and lead students to realizing that the Romeo & Juliet references in earlier chapters were an intentional set-up for this feud.

    Discuss the possibility that this feud is a parody of a trope, instead of a straight example of it. Divide the class in two. Have half the class work together to invent a plausible...
