Connecting 2 batteries in series doubles the voltage presented to the bulb, which makes the bulb brighter. Connecting identical batteries in parallel increases the energy storage capacity at a constant voltage – the same bulb can burn twice as long (at the same brightness). It also lowers the internal resistance of the power source, allowing slightly more current to flow.
