Chapter 17 - Temperature and Heat - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 574: Q17.17

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

The thermal conductivity of water is relatively low compared to that of the material of the ice cube tray, e.g., metal. Heat is conducted rapidly out of a layer adjacent to the sides of the tray, and also from the top layer of water that borders the cold air inside the freezer, so these layers freeze first. The water inside the bulk of the cube is the last to freeze solid.
