Chapter 14 - Periodic Motion - Problems - Discussion Questions - Page 459: Q14.19

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

The natural frequencies of the structure’s oscillations should be quite different from typical earthquake frequencies. If they are not, resonance may cause a peaking of the amplitude when the driving frequency is close to a natural frequency. A large amount of damping is desired, to quickly damp down structural oscillations.
