Work Step by Step

The relative strengths of the fundamental forces play a role in the rate of decay. Decays that proceed via the electromagnetic interaction, for example, proceed more slowly than those that happen via the strong interaction, but more quickly than those that proceed via the weak interaction. Table 32-4 lists the lifetimes for some heavy hadrons. The decays that occur via the weak interaction correspond to particles whose lifetimes are many orders of magnitude greater than the others in the table. All of the particles listed in the table, except for $J/\Psi (3097)$, $\Upsilon(9460)$, and the $\Sigma$ particles, decay via the weak interaction.
