Chapter 10 - Fluids - Questions - Page 284: 9

Answer

The air pressure outside the balloon gets lower as the balloon rises (because the atmosphere becomes colder and thinner), becoming lower than the pressure inside the balloon. The higher inside air pressure expands the balloon and stretches out the balloon walls.

Work Step by Step

If the balloon walls were already stretched to their maximum at launch, the balloon would pop as it rose.
