Chapter 29 - The Magnetic Field - Stop to Think 29.6 - Page 824: 1

Answer

Option b. Out of the page at the bottom of the loop; into the page at the top.

Work Step by Step

At first its a little hard to see what's going on in this photo since there isn't text to explain it. In the diagram, the current loop on the left is moving to the left and the magnet on the right is moving to the right as a result of being magnetically repelled by each other. It is critical to understand that both entities are moving. As a result of the two objects being repelled, this means that the current loop must be a magnetic dipole. We know that the south pole of this dipole must be on the right side of the loop (the side closest to the magnet) because a repulsion force is moving the two objects, so two alike poles must be near each other. This means that the magnetic field lines generated by the current loop must point to the left. Thus, by the right-hard curl method, the current in the loop is out of the page at the bottom of the loop and into the page at the top of the loop. Option b. is correct.
