Chapter 29 - The Magnetic Field - Stop to Think 29.5 - Page 818: 1

Answer

Into the page.

Work Step by Step

Using the right hand rule, we point our thumb in the direction of current or velocity, our index finger in the direction of the magnetic field, and our middle finger in the direction of the magnetic force. Since the velocity of the electron is downward and the magnetic force is leftward, we can use our right hand to point downwards with our thumb and to the left with our middle finger. Now, we stick out our index finger to see that it points towards us, out of the page. However, since we're dealing with an electron, we have to flip the algebraic sign of the magnetic field. Instead of the magnetic field pointing towards us and out of the page, it points away from us and into the page.
