Chapter 1 - Concepts of Motion - Exercises and Problems - Page 30: 45

Answer

A car coasts along a road at a constant speed until it arrives at the bottom of a hill. As the car coast up the hill, it SLOWS down. At the top of the hill, the road flattens and then continues coasting at a REDUCED speed.

Work Step by Step

It starts at a constant speed since the vectors are the same length and the velocity is zero. Then, it is clear that it slows down since the acceleration arrows are pointed in the opposite direction of the vector. Once the car has slowed down, it stays at that speed for the duration of the problem. It is clear that there is no increase in speed since there are never any acceleration arrows pointed the same direction as the vectors.
