Chapter 17 - Think and Explain - Page 334-335: 93

Answer

It is true that wrapping newspaper around the ice makes it last longer, but this practice reduces the cooling effect on the air in the icebox, which is the whole purpose of an icebox. In other words, wrapped ice keeps the icebox at a lukewarm temperature for a long time, but naked ice keeps the icebox frosty for a shorter time.
