Thin glass is used because when the filament turns on, it heats up to thousands of degrees in less than a second. A thin layer of glass has low heat capacity and heats up all at once. If the glass were thick, the inside surface would heat up before the outside, and the greater expansion on the inner surface might fracture the glass.
