Chapter 23 - Mirrors and Lenses - Learning Path Questions and Exercises - Exercises - Page 806: 11

Answer

a) The image is (1) real,, (2) inverted, (3) reduced. b) 66.7 cm infront of the mirror. c) lateral magnification is 0.667.

Work Step by Step

a) We will see that the rays converge below the x-axis making the new image inverted (therefore real) and reduced in size because the new image is smaller than the original object size. b) By the spherical mirror equation, $\frac{1}{do}+\frac{1}{di}=\frac{1}{f}$ Thus, $\frac{1}{100}+\frac{1}{di}=\frac{1}{40}$ So, the image is 66.7 cm in front of the mirror. c) Magnification = $|\frac{66.7}{100}|=0.667$
