Chapter 19 - Magnetism - Learning Path Questions and Exercises - Exercises - Page 688: 15

Answer

(b) counterclockwise

Work Step by Step

We can use right-hand force rules to determine the direction of current flow in the coil. Let us consider the point A at the top of the coil. The magnetic field is pointing up and so the right hand palm should point up. Since the point A is moving away from you, the thumb should also point away from you, then the fingers tell you that the current must be flowing south. Similarly at point B, the current will be found to be pointing north. Thus, the current must flow counterclockwise.
