Chapter 19 - Magnetism - Learning Path Questions and Exercises - Exercises - Page 688: 14

Answer

(b) west

Work Step by Step

We can use right-hand force rules to determine the direction of magnetic force on current carrying wires. Weight acts downwards and hence the magnetic force should be applied upwards. Earth's magnetic field at the equator will be pointing south, thus right hands palm should be facing south and the thumb should point up so that the other fingers are directed towards west. Thus the current should be flowing towards the west.
