If we push the button is both cases, we complete the circuit. The current should activate the electromagnet, causing the clapper to be attracted and ring the bell. However, this breaks the armature contact and opens the cicuit and holding the button causes this to occur again. For the other scenario, when the circuit is completed the electromagnet attracts the core and compresses the spring. Inertia causes it to hit a tone bar and the spring force sends the core to strike the other bar.
