Chapter 19 - Magnetism - Learning Path Questions and Exercises - Conceptual Questions - Page 689: 14

Answer

The wires attract each other because the magnetic field created by each wire causes the other wire to receive a magnetic force. You can verify this by using the right-hand rule. E.g. :- say both currents move in positive y direction. The left wire would move to the right as the field generated the other wire points out of the page, so the force is directed to the right. This is same with other wire. The magnitude of force on wire with lesser current is larger as the field created by larger current is greater.
