Since the battery is "dead" then the final terminal voltage is less than the initial terminal voltage. This means that more voltage is needed across the terminals to charge it. By placing the battery in parallel to the dead one the circuit will have higher terminal voltage. If it is placed in a series connection, the terminal voltage would be decreased.
