Chapter 12 - Liquids, Solids, and Intermolecular Forces - Exercises - Problems - Page 441: 47

Answer

Boiling water is an endothermic process as the energy required to convert liquid molecules to gas molecules and to set them free. The enthalpy change for the melting of ice is positive as energy is given off during the process. The boiling point of the liquid is the temperature at which the vapor pressure of the liquid is equal to the atmospheric pressure. This tells us that boiling point depends on pressure. At high altitudes, the pressure is very low hence boiling point is also low. Hence on top Denver Colorado, the pressure is about 84 kilopascals and the boiling point of water is 95 C.
