Chapter 2 - Atoms, Molecules, and Ions - Exercises - Page 76: 2.53b

Answer

Structural formula: CH$_{3}$CH$_{2}$OH Molecular formula: C$_{2}$H$_{6}$O

Work Step by Step

This ball and stick model depicts a carbon atom with 3 bonded hydrogen attached to another carbon atom with 2 bonded hydrogen attached to an oxygen atom with 1 bonded hydrogen. The structural formula can be determined from this, and the molecular formula can be found by simply finding the total amount of each atom. The molecular formula for this is the same as in part (a), but the structural formula, or the structure of each molecule is different. These two molecules are called isomers.
