Chapter 3 - Exercises - Page 130: 15

A chemical formula indicates the elements present in a compound and their ratio. It allows us to determine the percent composition of a specific element in a compound. For example, the chemical formula of Carbon Dioxide, CO_{2} indicates that there is one atom of carbon and two atoms of oxygen, so we can calculate the mass of each element and its proportion in the molecule. For these reasons, chemical formulas are important in chemistry.
