Work Step by Step

Molecular orbitals (MOs) are formed by the combination of atomic orbitals (AOs) from different atoms in a molecule. MOs are different from AOs in that they extend over the entire molecule rather than being localized to individual atoms. The shape of bonding MOs is such that the electron density is concentrated between the nuclei of the bonding atoms, while for antibonding MOs, the electron density is concentrated outside the internuclear region. Antibonding orbitals are higher in energy than bonding orbitals.
