Chapter 2 - Atoms, Molecules, and Ions - Review Questions - Page 72: 10

Answer

HBr$O_{4}$: perbromic acid KI$O_{3}$ : potassium iodate NaBr$O_{2}$ : Sodium bromite HIO: Hypoiodous acid

Work Step by Step

HBr$O_{4}$: perbromic acid: the acid name comes from the root of the anion +ic (since the anion name was perbromate) KI$O_{3}$ : potassium iodate : I$O_{3}^{-}$ name is iodate since it contains larger number of oxygen and since the cation is named first which is in this case potassium ion ($K^{+}$) then its name is potassium iodate. NaBr$O_{2} : Sodium bromite: sodium ($$Na^{+}$) is named first and then bromite which contains less number of oxygen. HIO: Hypoiodous acid: I$O^{-}$ anion is called hypoiodite and since it contains less oxygen then “ite” is replaced by “ous” and then add the word acid.
