Chapter 1 - Chemical Foundations - Exercises - Page 36: 60

Answer

a) -40.°C & -40.°F b) -269°C & -452°F c) 25°C & 77°F d) 3410°C & 6160°F

Work Step by Step

a) Celsius: 233K -273K= -40.°C (remember because of sig figs there must be a decimal point after the zero bc it is significant out to the ones place) Fahrenheit: (-40. x (9/5)) + 32 (-72) + 32= -40.°F b) Celsius: 4K -273K= -269°C Fahrenheit: (-269 x (9/5))+32 (-484.2)+32= 452.2°F With sig figs: -452°F (only significant out to the ones place) c) Celsius: 298K -273K= 25°C Fahrenheit: (25 x (9/5))+32 (45)+32= 77°F d) Celsius: 3680K -273K= 3407°C With sig figs: 3410°C (Only significant out to the tens place) Fahrenheit: (3407 x (9/5))+32 (6132.6)+32= 6164.6°F with sig figs: 6160°F (*IMPORTANT* you should never take the significance of a problem twice so you should use 3407°C instead of 3410°C. You must remember at the end however the answer is only significant out to the tens place)
