Chapter 22 - Nonmetallic Elements and Their Compounds - Questions & Problems - Page 990: 22.2

Answer

Two chemical properties that distinguish a metal from a nonmetal are : 1. Metals form basic oxides while Non-metals form acidic oxides or neutral oxides. 2. They have 1, 2 or 3 electrons in the valence shell. So they can lose electrons easily while Nonmetals own more than 4 electrons in their valence shell. So they can easily gain electrons. Two physical properties that distinguish a metal from a nonmetal are : 1. Metals are lustrous while Non-metals are non-lustrous. 2. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity while Non-metals are poor conductors of heat and electricity.(except graphite which is a good conductors of electricity).
