Chapter 7 - Microbial Genetics - Explorations On The Web - Page 212: 3

Answer

Yersinia pestis are acquired by humans and rodents by the bite of an infected flea or contact with infected tissues. After the bite of flea, initial subcutaneous and intradermal colonization occur. Then the bacteria move into the regional lymph nodes resulting in inflammation and cellulitis and development of large carbuncles. If not treated, the bacteria will escape from the lymph nodes and will spread through the blood to various organs which will cause septicemic plague. Three distinct operons (hmsHFRS, hmsT, and hmsP) are involved in the synthesis of the bacterial extracellular matrix, which is the primary component of Yersinia biofilm.
