There are two classes of nutrients. 1. Macronutrients- nutrients that are needed by the body in large amount for optimal functioning; contains energy in the form of calories. One example is carbohydrates which is the major fuel source for all cells of the body with certain cells solely relying on carbohydrates for energy (cells found in the nervous system and red blood cells). 2. Micronutrients- nutrients that are needed by the body in smaller amounts but still essential to carry out important bodily functions; they are not sources of energy but they assist in the process of energy metabolism. One example is the vitamins that are required to enable the body to perform various functions such as the production of red blood cells.
