MRSA is caused by a bacterium, Staphylococcus aureus, that has become resistant to common antibiotics such as methicillin, penicillin, and amoxicillin. HIV and SARS are caused by viruses and are not affected by the administration of antibiotics. Prions are infectious misfolded proteins that cannot be treated with antibiotics.
