The adaptive defense is activated when the pathogens have out numbered the innate defense. Adaptive defense is highly specific to the pathogen or virus. It depends on the action of lymphocytes which is either B cells or T cells. B cells and T cells can distinguish antigens and has antigen receptors that can bind with antigen to eliminate it.
