Chapter 7 - Section 7.1 - The Lymphatic System - Check Your Progress - Page 134: 1

Answer

The blood volume of the average adult is about 4.5-4.7 liters. The plasma of the blood is the source of the interstitial fluid (ISF) . This fluid filters out of capillaries at the arteriolar ends of capillary beds and fills the interstitial space (ISS). Most of this fluid is reabsorbed into the blood stream at the venous end ; however there is a residual amount of liquid (and some proteins) that are not returned to the blood at through the veins. This interstitial fluid residue is picked up by lymphatic vessels and returned to the blood circulation.
