Answer

The following are some of the causes of loss of biodiversity of species in order of importance: a. Habitat loss b. Alien species invasion c. Pollution d. Overpopulation e, Diseases

Work Step by Step

Humans have occupied and/or altered every ecosystem and biome on Earth. This has led to a near catastrophic loss of native species. Today scientist are especially concerned about the rapidly progressing loss of tropical rain forests ( 14 % to 6 % of Earth's land mass), an d the ongoing destruction of coral reefs( almost 50% destruction so far) . Alien or exotic species /non-native species are introduced into ecosystems either deliberately ( by agriculture or horticulture) or accidentally. Dandelion was introduced int the USA by the Pilgrims, but zebra mussel was accidentally introduced into the US from the Caspian Sea. Plants like the dandelion and Kudzu ( from Japan) have out-competed native plant species and now cover much of the land in the Southern USA.The zebra mussel is a pest in the Great Lakes where it has out-competed and squeezed out the Great Lakes native mussels. Pollution is responsible for about 24% of the loss of native species. Chemicals such as acid substances deposited in an environment weaken plants and make them more susceptible to diseases and insect pests. Several chemicals released into the environment interfere with reproduction of animals and lead to loss of species. Each biome has a carrying capacity and when that is exceeded animals die off to reduce the numbers to the ability of the environment to support them. Diesel account for about 5% of species loss . Both domestic and wild species are affected by rare and new diseases. The sea otter population on the California Coast has been reduced by 50% by new diseases
