Chapter 2 - Engage - Page 43: 4

Answer

4. Changing of pH alters the structure of molecules like plasma proteins. Changes in molecular structure affects the chemical activity of substances like enzymes and hormones.

Work Step by Step

The pH of blood and is about 7.40 (7.35-7.45); that of iterstial fluid is 7.35 and that of intercellular fluid (ICF) is 7.0. This can vary slightly in either direction without causing malfunctioning of organs. But if the pH gets too low ( acidosis) or too high ( alkalosis), problems in body physiological functioning will develop. Some symptoms of alkalosis are cramping and twitching of muscles. Some fluids in the body are acid and some are alkaline, but they all have pH ranges in which they function optimally.
