Chapter 18 - Section 18.4 - Pregnancy and Birth - Check Your Progress - Page 402: 1

Answer

18.4:1 Some hormones produced by the placenta include progesterone, estrogen, hCG, and human placental lactogen.

Work Step by Step

Progesterone acts to inhibit motility of the myometrium so that the conceptus is not expelled prematurely. Progesterone is also believed to suppress maternal immune responses so that the uterus does not reject the conceptus--immunologically. Estrogen stimulates and supports the secretory activities of the endometrium so that it receives and nourishes the conceptus. Estrogen also stimulates the synthesis of angiotensinogen by the liver-- an activity that helps regulate blood pressure the balance of electrolytes. Angiotensinogen is is involved with the disorder of pre-eclampsia . Human chorionic gonadotropin maintains and takes over functions of the corpus luteum (CL), ensuring the survival of the embryo and its retention in the uterus. Human placental lactogen stimulates secretory activity of the mammary glands.
